A comment was made regarding “micro deliverables” on the subject of methodologies. A challenge for me has been identifying so called “minimum viable products” that can be released somewhat independently from other functionality. Perhaps an interesting topic for future discussions would be whether releasing particular MVP’s before others worked well (or not so well) on projects and why.
On the topic of customers preparing for projects and being ready to make decisions, I would argue that the business analyst function plays a key role here. Decision points should be properly supported by context and facts for decision makers. To use the home building industry as an analogy, at no point is the homeowner told, “first things first, we need to excavate for your foundation…how long and how wide do you want your house to be?” Homeowners are guided from abstracted ideas about their future home to refined building plans by putting key decisions into context utilizing, for example, renderings, floor plans, models, and eventually blueprints. Similarly, I believe there is demand in the software industry for clients to be guided through decision making about their software implementations. Including a business analysis plan in the SOW can be a good start.
