I'm not technical

It's always dismaying to hear HR managers say I'm not technical when working on anything related to their HCM system. Maybe it's an interface issue with their benefits provider, understanding how a certain report works, or running a BW query - those things are no longer 'technical' but they are integral to how modern HCM processes and systems are run. Effective HR managers need to leverage both system and non-system knowledge to gain value for their customers because the days we could decouple the two are long gone.

Here's a tip for non-technical HR managers: instead of eschewing the technical side of the work, embrace it, learn about it and use it to get more value for your customers. Establish a partnership with your IT group and learn more about what they do - and maybe even teach them more about what you do.

The same point of view goes for SAP HCM consultants, too. Functional consultants have to understand a good deal of technical concepts if they hope to provide superior value to their clients. Of course, if you only want to provide mediocre value, you can forget about all that technical stuff.
