Notes and Updates from SAP

Looks like there is a bug in Wagetype Reporter, fixed with note 2807848. If you run the report, restricting to employees in a specific company code, it only selects payrolls where the employee was in that company as of the end of the pay period. If they transferred out of that company mid-period, then they are not selected. Although not specifically mentioned in the note, when you look at the code changes this correction will apply not only to mid-period company code changes, but also changes in employee group/subgroup and personnel area/subarea. How did this go so long without being fixed? For the last 15 or so years I've been advising customers to use a third-party reporting application, or writing a bespoke version of Wagetype Reporter so I honestly haven't had much visibility to this report for quite a while.

If you are using US Payroll plus Tax Reporter for unemployment tax filing and you have people in Indiana (whew!) then take a look at note 2806948. Indiana wants to know the employee's start date, but if the start date is outside the quarter being reported then SAP is sending blanks. Oopsie.

SAP has expanded its support channels on WhatsApp. Until now, I didn't have much of a reason to use WhatsApp, but now I do.

Around the Web

My latest blog on payroll is about fixing those things that annoy us, always in the background taking energy, things that we don't muster the time and energy to fix. But we should fix them: When getting payroll done makes payroll unbearable.

And our latest SAP HCM Insights podcast is about how you can make your SAP SuccessFactors projects more successful. Start with some good pre-project planning!

Danielle Larocca has a good blog on SAP Payroll - Can You Keep It? Well, yes, for quite a while actually. There are trade-offs, and I think everyone needs to carefully consider that against moving to EC Payroll and even outsourcing some payroll to third-party providers. Don't change your payroll only because someone at SAP says you should - do it because you want to move it to a better platform, to make improvements, or to keep in closer sync with the HR platform. There are all sorts of reasons to look at, but fear is not one of them.

And finally - here are the top questions to practice for an SAP Payroll interview! Here is part 1 and part 2. Yes, if you can answer these, you are apparently qualified to be an SAP Payroll Consultant or Analyst. Seriously - this is a start but if you want to be successful with SAP Payroll you will need much, much more than this.

Quote of the Moment

"We are stuck with technology when what we really want is just stuff that works" -- Douglas Adams

So - cheers to a payroll system that just works!

Have a great day!
